Community Fellow

As a Defend Our Future Community Fellow, you’ll play a key role in advocating for climate action and deepening our impact in the communities we serve. The Community Fellow will work hand in hand with one of our local community partner groups on a project that addresses local climate issues while connecting to federal advocacy efforts. As a representative of Defend Our Future in your community, you can help empower those living on the frontlines of the climate crisis.

GOALS

    • Expand Defend Our Future’s presence in your local community
    • Develop relationships with community leaders and local climate advocates
    • Execute a project developed in coordination with a local community organization or small business
    • Advocate for and educate decision makers on climate solutions.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Work closely with the Community Organizing Program Manager and Sponsor Organization to successfully complete a community-based advocacy project.
    • Support federal advocacy efforts by engaging community members to advocate for climate solutions
    • Collect comment cards in support of upcoming key EPA rulemaking hearings that impact our health and climate
    • Plan and execute one community educational event

QUALIFICATIONS

    • Be available to commit 5-10 hours per week in this role.
    • Passion for environmental advocacy and social change.
    • Work collaboratively and meet deadlines.
    • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, Google docs and social media (Facebook, Twitter and Instagram).
    • Excellent communication skills and willingness to engage diverse audiences, from members of Congress, volunteers and the public.
    • Prior experience in outreach and advocacy is preferred.
    • Must have access to a working laptop computer that is WiFi enabled.

REPORTING

    • The Defend Our Future Community Organizing Fellow will report to the Defend Our Future Community Organizing Project Manager and participate in regular (biweekly) calls with other ambassadors and monthly check-ins with their sponsor organization. The Fellow will be responsible for submitting an in-depth report at the end of their project.

COMPENSATION

    • The Community Fellow will receive a $6000 stipend for the duration of their project period. Costs for supplies, events, and other activities will be covered by Defend Our Future/EDF,
      subject to approval.
